David M. Derner was born in Buffalo, New York and moved to Vermont when he was nineteen years old. Although David has no formal art schooling, he was instructed in the basics of color and composition by his mother, Estelle, an artist who eventually taught watercolor at Marietta College in Ohio. David’s desire to create and his natural ability to visualize is an integral component of David’s sculptures. His work leans toward the “Art Nouveau” and is naturally organic in style. His inspirations come largely from nature and many of his patterns come from actual plants and natural form. David’s fantasy sculptures also have a very organic look. His ability to mix different media with copper make his artwork unique. His imagination runs from stand-alone sculptures, wall and ceiling hanging sculptures, dioramas, copper lighting and water sculptures. Because he has a working knowledge of wood, stained glass, casting with tin, lead, pewter and chemically inducing patinas, his artwork is an ever-changing eclectic stew of media that tantalizes the mind's palette.
